This place is a marvel. First, unlike most restaurants, it's not anchored to any town. It just sits out there in the middle of the sage brush. As other reviewers have stated, it is a rustic joint. Power is by generator. The decor is wonderful; it is the opposite of the kinds of restaurants that have been decorated 'all at once'. This decor has emerged over time, and is in keeping with the tenor of the area. Animal skins, old traps, Forest Service signs and horse tack cover the walls. A big old wood stove provides wonderful heat and light. The food is awesome. When you call ahead, you choose either a whole roast chicken or a 36 ounce top sirloin. Upon being seated, you are brought a dinner salad with one of two dressings; a decent ranch or a fabulous house honey-mustard, (which they sell for 6 bucks, just ask!), and a plate of hot skillet bread. Then comes the 'soup' which is usually a cowboy style bean stew, like those you eat at any branding. Then comes your meat-n-taters and yeah, there's a heap of it, and it is beautifully prepared. The meat is cooked in an outdoor grill/smoker, and the flavor is awesome. The thing to do is to have one person order the chicken and the other beef, so you can each have both. Lastly comes desert, which is always homey and decadent. This isn't high-falutin food- it's country fare, perfectly cooked. The only thing that stops me from giving it the full five stars is the speed with which the staff rushes you through your meal. If anyone at your table has finished a course, the waitress is there instantly, trying to clear off all the plates. Each time I've gone, I've had to slow down the service- I'd actually like to be able to burp between courses. It's really funny, the speed with which they want to move you through. Last time I went, I had to tell the waitress I was not finished 3 times, and I am not a slow eater! Still, this is easy to over come. Just tell them ya aint done yet! And the leftovers are great! Oh, and NO PLASTIC. BRING CASH!

The Cowboy Dinner Tree is the restaurant that Oregonians in the know tell you about. People drive from all over to eat at this out-of-the way eatery. The experience is like one of those extended family gatherings where you have your Aunt or Grandmother who is cooking & isn't going to let anyone go home hungry. The food is plain, hearty fare. If you want beer, cocktails, or wine with dinner you are in the wrong place,(they don't have a liquor license.) Plus as the entree, they only serve chicken or steak. So if you are looking more variety, this isn't your place. The salad was a simple dinner salad with homemade honey mustard dressing & ranch dressing. They also bring out hot steaming dinner rolls that they appear to bake themselves with whipped butter, Yum. Next is the "Cowboy Bean" soup, which is bean soup with cubes of steak & I believe Celery. It's a good soup. The entree selections as I mentioned are chicken & steak. Oh, did I mention that it's a whole chicken & the most ginormous thick slab of steak I've ever seen. I had the steak. My dining companion had the chicken. We split each in half & let's say I didn't feel deprived. The chicken was OK. To me it wasn't any different than a Rotisserie Chicken that you get at a grocery store or Costco. I wish they had a distinctive spice that had made the Chicken something more than it was. The steak, one word: Wow! They don't appear to cook to order, but it appeared Medium-Rare. Imagine a 1"-1 1/2" thick tender large steak that melts in your mouth & this is what you get.(They offer Horseradish with the Steak, but I feel it overpowered the flavor of the meat.) At the end of the meal, the waitress gives all of the diners a bag to take home leftovers & you will have leftovers. The dessert was good. A Brownie in a white sauce. In summary, I gave the Cowboy Dinner Tree four stars because I was disappointed in the average chicken. Otherwise, I would've given it 5 stars.

This is the restaurant that you bring your out of state friends to for the true Oregon experience...you know the ones who pronounce it OR-E-GONE? Make sure you tell them you are going to dinner and to save room for the meal. LOTS OF ROOM....Plan a late breakfast and then an earlyish dinner so that when you get there you are ready to eat! Make a reservation- during the reservation let the restaurant know what you will have for dinner....Chicken or Steak. That's right...two options... Drive to Silver Lake....Make sure that you have a GPS or very specific directions! If you miss the small turn you will continue driving through Eastern Oregon. Be ready for a drive- it takes about 90 mins from Bend. When you get to the restaurant you feel you have stepped back in time. The restaurant runs on a generator...that's right...no electricity...so no credit cards! But the reason that your bring your friends so far to the middle of Eastern Oregon is for the food. The food is amazing! I love steak and they make the best steak...tasty, tender and HUGE. Definitely bring a cooler so that you can put your doggie bag on ice for the ride home. The homemade biscuits are divine and the cowboy beans are soo yummy...both are a meal all on their own! Dessert is always homemade and it changes depending on what they have! No alcohol at the Cowboy Dinner Tree but all the lemonade, ice tea or coffee you can drink in a cowboy sized mason jar. Don't have any friends coming into town...make the trip with your local friends or family. It is totally worth it!

Like many before us, we were totally in awe of the food served here. Of course, the ride there makes you wonder if you are ever going to find it, and once you do, the signs are not obvious, but that many cars parked out in the middle of nowhere, including RV's, lets you know you have found it. Looks like a shack from the outside, but hints at Western history. Inside, we were quickly taken to a table. As stated, reservations are a must, including pre-ordering your choice of meals. Somehow, our pre-order was incorrect, and they do not have extra steaks or chicken, other than the number of reservations made. As a consequence, we were told 4 steaks, not the 2 steaks and 2 chickens we requested. From that point on, Connie went way above and beyond to satisfy us with the 4 steaks. Service was wonderful, the steaks were not steaks, they must have been roasts- top sirloin, HUGE. Salad had cilantro in it, wonderful! Bean soup- superb, and the rolls-wow! The steaks-unbelievable and somehow, pink throughout, even though 3 inches thick. Even homemade strawberry shortcake, as great as the rolls. Quart mason jars of pink lemonade. Even better yet, as you can't possibly eat it all - you can take everything home with you- soup, butter, salad, meals, everything. Might be a great idea to take a cooler in your car. We ate 5 more meals from the leftovers. Loved the place, highly recommend it.

I went to the Cowboy Dinner Tree after a friend raved about the steaks. I was skeptical, but made my reservations. Owner Connie Ramage was our server. She treated us like family and provided us with excellent service during our visit. Dinner started with a big family style salad with bottles of home made Ranch and Honey Mustard dressing. I made myself two salads because both dressings were so good I couldn't choose one. The pie pan of home made rolls were delicious. The baked beans were well done and authentic. Then the steak and baked potato arrived. Simply huge! My steak looked like a two pound roast. I was skeptical how a three inch thick sirloin roast could be cooked properly and have any tenderness at all. I sliced through the middle of the steak and was delighted to see it was dark pink. A perfect medium rare throughout. My first bite was melt in your mouth tender and easily one of the top steaks I've ever eaten. Connie did her best to explain how they can prepare a Sirloin "Culotte" cut to taste better and be more tender than Prime graded Filet's, New York's, and Rib Eye's. Aging for over three weeks, Dry Rub, Top Quality Meat Distributor... Don't know how they do it, but the meal was delicious. I am a big eater and was only able to finish half of my steak. Desert and beverage were included for a ridiculously low price of $23.50. This was one of the most fun and satisfying meals I've had in a long time. Go check this place out and take friends. They will be amazed. This is a link to a video review on You-Tube; youtube.com/watch?v=Jc5R…

Most of the other reviews have explained the quirky specifics .... isolation, cash only, rustic setting, no alcohol, etc. I can only add that I was less impressed with the steak than others seem to be. It was a BIG hunk of tough rare flesh. My serrated knife was less than sharp and I felt like I was chainsawing it apart. And my wimpy fork kept bending in half so that I had to keep straightening it; which left me wondering, what if I didn't like rare steak?? I suppose I could have sent it back to the grill but it must take a while to cook that side of beef to medium well! I don't mind nearly raw but I was never asked a preference. We had had a late brunch and we were not nearly hungry enough either ... another disclaimer. I still offer it four stars, however, because of the overall experience and the relatively cheap price. It was a fun day of exploring the Oregon Outback that concluded with a memorable meal. Sometimes the number of stars is more complicated than the meal itself.

My husband and I love this place. It's one of the very few places where he can eat and leave completely stuffed! For $28 you get unlimited iced tea or lemonade, a plate of rolls, fresh green salad with home made dressing, bean soup, baked potato, and a whole chicken or 28-32 ounce steak plus dessert. It's really amazing. And reservations are REQUIRED. If you look around and see money on the walls that's from customers. The cowboy dinner tree collects the money periodically and donates it to the Wounded Warrior Project. The waitress said the last collection was over $1,200.00. Pretty neat little restaurant. Leftovers are taken home in a plastic bag, so If you want to keep the soup I recommend bringing your own Tupperware. If you have AT&T there is no cell service out there. There is patchy service in Silverlake. If you come here once and try it, you'll be back. It's quite the experience!

Cowboy dinner tree is more about the atmosphere and staff than the food in my opinion. Don't give me wrong the food was good. The first course salad and the dressing was delicious absolutely fantastic. The second course with you was either soup or beans I'm not personally a fan but others at the table said both were delicious. The rules oh my gosh those rolls best thing I ate all night (I do wish honey butter was served though). I had the chicken it was chicken and another person at the table got the steak, aside from the fact that it was ginormas it was just a steak. I don't believe there's any other reason that you would ever need to go to Silverlake but if you happen to be able to get out there it's definitely worth the trip. Reservations required

The Cowboy Dinner Tree what can be said that hasn't already been said? A trip to the CDT is a reason to drive all the way out to Silver Lake, OR. Not a lot out there so this is a destination in itself. Reservations are required. While you're at it see if you can order an extra pan of rolls to go home with you the night of your visit. Arrive a few minutes early to check out the gift shop. The food is worth every penny and more. Shhhh! Don't tell the owners I said that. I still remember my reaction to the look of the place the first time our friends took us all the way out to Silver Lake to have dinner. The misgivings I had about the place by the look of the restaurant were quickly put to rest by the greetings of the server's, the cooks and the food. The food, oh my the food! Every thing is served family style except the main course with the baked potato. Part of the charm is you are served on mismatched plates, with mismatched eating utensils. You drink your iced tea or lemonade out of mason jars. Coffee is also available. Salad of fresh greens, cowboy beans or soup of the day, rolls, the rolls are a tender taste of heaven. Chicken or steak are your choice of main course ordered when you make your reservations. Don't ask for steak sauce, the last time I was there they didn't have it and you don't need it. If you like your steak a little more well done ask them to butterfly your steak to cook it through more. Prepare to take some of it home, there is more food than most can eat in one sitting. We've had left overs for two days running with just the steaks. If you have room they serve a nice light desert to satisfy the sweet craving. The wait staff is the best. We've had them stop and sit for a few seconds to catch their breath because they do get busy, cooks too. Prepare to receive some good humored ribbing and bantering. If you give it they know how to give it back. If a snooty wait staff and linens with cloth napkins are your preference you may feel out of your element here but if you let yourself loosen up you will love it. You will want to return ASAP. Go with friends or family. Take cash because they don't do credit cards and that is no joke. This is an experience you will want to experience time and again every time you are in Central Oregon. They have a website so go check it out before going so you know what to expect. You will not be disappointed.

1st time visit. All I have to say is that it's worth the drive! And if you can't finish the most tender and tasty 26 to 30 ounce steak you've had for the money, you're not alone!

  • Kelaiah W.

We go here almost every year. It is great. Must have a reservation since it takes so long to prepare the meal. Start of with a garden salad then beans or soup depending on what they made that day and amazing roles. Then the main course either a 32oz steak or a small whole chicken with a baked potato. Finish with desert. Good ol fashioned home style cooking. Something grandma would make. Good luck finding anything else like it.

1.5 hour drive from Bend, OR. Beautiful drive down the Oregon Scenic Byway. $28 a plate. Dinner is ginormous! Be sure to come hungry. Dinner consists of salad, soup, dinner rolls, mason jars filled with tea or lemonade, baked potato, real butter, sour cream, HUGE steak or a WHOLE chicken and finish off with marionberry shortcake. Reservations required & arriving early does not mean you will be seated early. The reservation is timed with your food being prepared. It takes one hour of cook time for a whole chicken. If you do get there early, they have a gift shop & a horse shoe pit. Brian the chef works his culinary magic with the meat that is cooked outdoors. You can smell the deliciousness when you pull into the driveway. The indoor staff was amazing. Holly is the best waitress ever! Wonderful personality and so easy to talk to. She is truly passionate about what she does. After a delicious meal that will leave you stuffed, the starry filled Central Oregon sky will take your breath away.

An experience you must have!!! Cowboy Dinner Tree is amazing! Our group was definitely satisfied with our experience. 11 of loaded into the RV and headed out! We arrived a few minutes late for our reservation, but the staff was just happy we made it! The salad with homemade buttermilk ranch or fresh honey mustard dressing was amazing! I'm sure I've never had a better salad! The rolls were great! All but 1 of us got steak! It's more like a small roast! The flavor was incredible! The chicken was tender and also just as amazing!!! Everyone left with leftovers and full stomachs! We can't wait to go back!!!!

If you want a great adventure, do yourself a favor . . . Make a reservation, pack up your family and/or loved ones and go, go, GO to the Cowboy Dinner Tree! Read the reviews on Yelp for the specifics and enjoy a nice road trip, topped off with one of the best dining experiences you will ever have. Enjoy playing cowboy for a few hours and getting away from the hustle and bustle of civilization. A couple of tips: Be sure to arrive early to check out the grounds and gift shop, and pack a cooler for the leftovers. Make a day of it. You won't be disappointed! One last thing: If you're snooty, stay home . . . this place is NOT for you.

Great experience, we absolutely loved it. 28-30oz sirloin cooked perfectly. Served medium rare unless specified otherwise. Your meal starts with salad with homemade dressing followed by homemade soup and fresh baked rolls. Then your protein either a huge steak or a whole chicken. Must make reservations and specify choice of meat when doing so. Great service and friendly staff, we even got a tour of the BBQ area before dinner. Restaurant was rustic and customers leave dollar bills on the wall which are donated to the wounded warrior project. A must do for anyone who enjoys eating!

Loved it! If you are anywhere in the Central Oregon area, plan to make a stop here. Nice drive to get out there and lots of food waiting. I had leftovers for two days from all the steak!

Service was great. So much food it's over whelming. Salad, rolls, soup, beans, baked potato and either an entire roasted chicken or a 28-32 oz steak plus dessert. Steak was a little over seasoned but good. I've had better food but worth going for the experience. Very rustic and quaint.

Different place for sure. Huge steak or chicken, only thing they serve . The Dutch oven biscuits are fabulous . The chicken comes whole, the steak is thick, and most likely med or rare. They butterfly it and put it back on the grill for you if you like it well done. Homemade soup and salad make a meal by then selves. Down side, no air conditioning. Like an old cook shack , rustic puts it mildly. They like reservations so they are sure to have enough to go around. Check their website before going to get all the info . During deer season the place is packed .

I'd like to make this a review that doesn't focus on the steak. The steak is great. It's really big. We all know that. The greatest thing about CDT may not be the steak. The salad has amazingly fresh, full of flavor lettuce with carrot and cabbage and all kinds of other good stuff. It comes with the best homemade ranch and honey mustard dressing. Then, you get family style servings of 2 different soups. Yesterday it way cowboy bean (with perfectly cooked beans and bacon) and corn chowder (which was the soup equivalent of nirvava). I haven't even gotten to the star of the dinner yet. That would be the dinner rolls. They are hands down the best roll, or bread of any kind, that I have ever eaten. And they are all you can eat! So, here's the secret to CDT. Forget the steak, take the whole thing home unbeaten. Instead, savor the salad, incredible soup and bread, and finish it off with dessert!

Make a reservation and roundup your family or group of friends and take a road trip to where the cattle drive trail ends. This was a fun dining experience in a true cowboy style. This is for people who want a unique evening away from the constant city interruptions. The food is freshly prepared and just melts in your mouth. Make sure and go hungry because the portions are hearty. Be prepared to take leftovers home. Get there early and visit the gift shop and check out the horseshoe pit. Staff are fantastic and more than willing to make this an outstanding dining experience. If you cannot live without your electronic devices for a couple of hours than stay home.

I'm not sure what there is to be disappointed about here. For $27, each diner can stuff themselves into oblivion with some of the best home-made food out there. And, they'll do it in an old west themed restaurant in the middle of cowboy country. I won't reiterate the positive reviews of others since I wholeheartedly agree with each and every one. I will address the boob who was angry that alcohol was not available: Seek help. AA, maybe? Anyone who thinks it's a good idea to eat their weight in food and pile booze on top of it, and then DRIVE for an hour desperately needs to seek treatment.

Called this place, made a reservation for two. As I was on the phone, I asked my wife , "do you want a 30 ounce steak or an entire chicken for your entree??" The OMGWTF look she had on her face was priceless. She was speechless for so long it became awkward. So I made a judgement call and went for the red meat for both of us. We drove from our yurt in La Pine state park to this fabled restaurant, it took well over an hour. This place truly is located somewhere in the same zipcode as Bumfuck, Egypt. Isolation aside, all of the stories are true. $27 a person. There is no alcohol served. You must pay with cash. It is busy. And the steak is not fucking around.

Wow, this was great! We decided to not only have dinner here but to stay the night in one of the cabins too! I reserved the meal and the cabin about a month in advance. I can tell you that I have been waiting and waiting for this meal and experience for every day since the day I reserved! And it has been worth it! Yes the drive is long. ..yes the portions are huge! Dinner was delicious and the cabin is very cool and rustic! As we were sitting on the front porch waiting for dinner, we met the owner along with a horse and 2 kitties! Very quiet and peaceful. ..just what we were looking for on this weekend getaway. And just to clarify, dinner was amazing and we definitely had leftovers! We are coming back for sure!

Holy Cow! This place is awesome! The food is great; I had the steak and it was cooked to perfection. The rolls, beans, salad, and desert were excellent, as well. We met the owner and he seemed like a great guy - the kind who doesn't know a stranger. We stayed overnight in one of the two cabins and that was a great experience, too. Very rustic but that's how they roll at Cowboy Dinner Tree. When we woke-up the next morning the owner's daughter came over to the cabin and asked if we wanted to see her animals. So, before we knew it we were helping her feed horses, chickens, etc... We then talked with the owner a bit more before heading home. Super nice family, great food, fun experience. Will be back, for sure!

An experience for sure. Drinks, salad, beans, hot flaky ROLLS ROLLS ROLLS, baked potato with a side of the juiciest whole chicken with perfectly seasoned crispy skin or tender, perfectly cooked steak...? Can you call that a steak? It's the size of a tri-tip roast. My advice for you and my game plan for next time: eat a whole plate of rolls and as much of the protein you can handle and go easy on everything else.

Totally fell in love with this place, the people and the food. Our group ordered both the steak and the chicken and they were cooked to perfection. We got there about an hour early and it turned out great. We played horse shoes, roped the dummy and relaxed. The only thing that would have made it slightly more comfortable would have been an option for lemonade outside. It was totally worth the drive and the money. We WILL be returning.

We've been here twice and will definitely go again. Highly recommend this place for a unique dining experience in the remote locale of Silver Lake, Oregon that harkens back to a simpler time where HUGE family style portions & a casual relaxed atmosphere are king. As other reviewers have noted: --Reservations required. --You'll be asked chicken or beef? And seating time, starting at 4pm. --Expect to bring home leftovers. A cooler is a great idea. --Cash only. --No alcohol. Facilities: The place is pretty rundown and one can't help but wonder what sort of building codes they have in Silver Lake as you aren't sure whether or not the creaking floor is about to give way on your next step causing you to sink one leg up to your groin. Still, I prefer to think its all part of the ambiance. The creaking and uneven floor providing acoustical charm to the down home meal awaiting your ravenous appetite. I found myself sauntering across the dining room to our waiting table like a real cow poke just in from the range. Tipping my hat to the ladies and looking for a spittoon to....no wait...I don't chew. Nonetheless, you get the picture. Service: Out of this world attentive. Starting from the moment you walk in, you are welcomed with a "Howdy Partner!" and quickly ushered to your waiting table. Lots of smiles and friendly banter abound. A genuine sense of family and appreciation ooze from every cobwebbed corner, rusty nail, chipped plate and mismatched piece of silverware. Food: Bottomless mason jars of ice tea or lemonade. You keep a drinking, they keep a filling! Fresh salad greens...no tomatoes or other fixings, but plenty of crispy leaf lettuce with a few sprigs of cilantro for added flavor...topped with either their home made buttermilk ranch or tangy honey mustard is hard to resist. Then comes the soup and / or beans with fresh rolls. All served family style. Have as many helpings as your quickly expanding tummy can handle. We all thought the beans were worth a second ladle and regretted that decision once the main course arrived. Because just when you think this was all a meal in itself, your server is beckoning, "We got two chickens & five steaks here...now who's got what?" As pictures can attest: the steak is actually a small roast and the chicken is a whole roasted chicken...and let's not forget the baked tater! I challenge anyone to finish this meal. I wonder if its ever been done? To top it all off, after To Go bags have been filled with enough meat for the next three days...dessert awaits. None of us thought we could eat another bite, but alas it was so light, refreshing and yummy that not a one of our seven didn't polish it off and practically lick the plate clean. Yes, it was THAT good. Value: Unanimous---worth every penny and more! There is no possible way anyone could leave hungry. Combined with the leftovers for the next several days, how could you not feel the $27 was a great deal? Rarely have any of us felt like you really paid for what you got at $27 a plate. Side Notes: --They switched from wood fired to propane grilling and some in our party thinks this cost the meat some flavor. --For those preferring their meat more well done, just ask they'll be happy to accommodate and butterfly your roast for even grilling and a doneness to your liking. --The chicken was a bit dry for my taste and was ultimately a disappointment for me as I was anticipating better (hence my star deduction). I'd probably stick with the steak in the future.

This place is an experience. It's been a while since we ate there and we still talk about it. The rolls, so tasty. When you make your reservation let them know you'd like to buy extra rolls to take home. You won't regret it. The salad is yummy with no iceberg lettuce in sight. The bean soup was marvelous. The steak was probably one of the better steaks I've had. It made great leftovers as did the potato. Great service. They didn't really have much for condiments when we were there so if you like A1 for your steak or honey or jam for your rolls bring it with you.

Indeed it was an experience and that is why you trek all the way to the country where you need a reservation for dinner. It is the home of the 28-30 oz sirloin steak, or a whole chicken. The dinner plate is hardly large enough to hold the meat and baked potato. I never did find a place to put the perfect white bread dinner roll, so ate it. The family style service is wonderful and you are sure to have more than you want or need. We were only offered one flavor of soup, cowboy bean. The salad was tasty as were the two house salad dressings. Dessert this evening was s small bowl of berries and cake. By dessert you really have little room left! The interior was rustic and there was no air conditioning. The table for four we had was a bit cramped and one of us had a shelf pushing into our shoulder. The service was very good and timing resulted in about an hour and a half dinner. Price on this is $28 per person and no sharing of meals. There is a small gift shop next to the restaurant, oh did I tell you the restaurant was small? Couple tables for parties of 6 and a few more for parties of 2 and 4. There are a couple cabins for rent for $126/night which includes dinner for two. Best deal around, as the town only has one small motel and two RV parks. Great experience you should do once in your life.

I was visiting friends in la pine, they took me to the cowboy dinner tree, omg the service was excellent, top sirloin melted in your mouth, salad awesome and the chicken vegetable soup outstanding, holly was our waitress with an infectious laugh hope to go back there again loved the place .

This place came highly recommended by our friends. They had been there twice before & traveled with us again this time. We were ALL disappointed in the experience. Our friends believe that maybe the place has changed ownership as everything that was served was "different". The meat is so rare that if you do NOT like rare, good luck. Plus it is as huge as a ROAST ... not a steak. Would have preferred a better cut of meat. Potato was dry and not worth eating. Rolls were excellent .. but apparently different than previously offered. I would NOT go back nor would I recommend this to any of our friends.

It is not often that you start running through death scenarios in your head on your way to dinner (at least not me), but you have a lot of time to think deep thoughts as you drive out into the high desert in search of a unique dining experience. The Cowboy Dinner Tree is way out there and as you are driving along the lonely highway, you see warning signs about the number of wildlife vs. car crashes. And by the way, if something does happen, there is no cell coverage (thank you AT&T). But really all of this just makes me sound like a tenderfoot. This restaurant on the outskirts of Silver Lake is roughly (don't quote me on this) an hour from Sunriver Resort south of Bend. It is essential that you call ahead and get a reservation AND directions, because believe me, you don't want to arrive and be turned away. You also need to pay close attention to the road signs, since we almost missed the turnoff. They are open year round, but only a few evenings a week and it varies seasonally. For those that decide to make the trek, here are some tips: 1) Gas up your car 2) Arrive hungry 3) Bring cash 4) Pack a cooler This family run restaurant was built at the site of the halfway point on a long trail ride where cowboys used to meet their families for dinner at the namesake tree. It is currently a ramshackle building with the grills out back and no electricity (so no credit card machine). This is not your anything-you-want chain experience. As a diner you only have two decisions to make: steak or chicken and what to drink (ice tea, lemonade or coffee). There is no boozing on the ranch. Which makes perfect sense considering the long drive home. The menu: Salad with honey mustard or ranch dressing - I wasn't too fond of the honey mustard so I suggest you do a taste test. Hearty soup - during our visit it was a bean soup Old fashioned sweet yeast rolls Entree - only two choices (now you'll understand my comment about the cooler): 26 - 30 oz. top sirloin steak - It was like being served a pot roast for your personal consumption. I suggest you ask for a side of horseradish sauce. OR 1 whole roasted chicken Baked potato Dessert - we were served a berry cobbler. The prices are very reasonable and kids six and under eat for free. Older kids (ages 7 - 13) are just $10 and are served all of the items above, except for the entree. So adults just carve off a portion of your steak or chicken for their meal. There is plenty to go around, plus lots of leftovers. We all enjoyed the experience and Mr. K got to play cowboy by showing off his roping skills with the lasso outside and my boys liked playing in the teepee. There is a small gift shop nearby with Western trinkets as well. This is a unique experience but the drive to get there was a little much. Part of what is holding me back from the fifth star is my fond memories of a restaurant we used to visit in Tumalo that closed a number of years ago. It was run by a modern version of the Osmond family and you got your chuck wagon vittles and ate while the family played Western music and sang songs from the old days on the range. And the food here, while served in mass quantities, is not the best I've ever eaten, but very good and it was one of our most interesting meals in Central Oregon.

This place is amazing. Straight out of an old western flick. The drive is unique, the shaq is in the middle of nowhere. But they put out great food, great cost and service. It's a flat fee, you need reservations. You pre order the food. It's either Steak or Chicken. Both were very nice. If your in the Bend Area. And have some extra time, get on the phone. Make the trip out to Silver Lake. It is only open 3 or 4 days per week. And the place is usually packed. Good Stuff!

This place is great. I recommend going hungry. Take a cooler for leftovers. We fed our twin boys (8 y/o) as well as our niece (10 y/o) and still ate beef for three dinners after this. I expected quantity, and not great quality. I was surprised that the steak (or roast - it was huge) was so flavorful, and cooked the way I like it. I couldn't eat 20% of it, thought. The sides were good, beans a little bland for my taste, but the kids liked them. Biscuits were just ok. That honey mustard dressing is AWFUL! We have dinner reservations there again for this Saturday. Looking forward to trying the chicken this time....so stay tuned. Should be interesting, as there are 18 people in our dinner party this weekend. Oh, and we had a little visitor during our meal - a small lizard entertained the kids by trying to outrun them. Fun fun! Must visit, at least once.

I have heard about Cowboy Dinner Tree and finally managed to get there. Wonderful service. We actually left with more food than we ate! They even provide the bag(s) to take your leftovers home. Awesome steak and Chicken. A little bit of a drive but well worth it.

We all went down to Silver Lake on a hunch that the Cowboy Dinner Tree would be an amazing experience. We were not wrong...not even a little bit. This place goes down in my book as one of the coolest restaurants anyone could ever go to. The highway to Silver Lake is long and kind of windy. Its a nice and long drive from Bend....totally worth it. The food is AMAZING! Prepare yourself for a surprise. They serve two meals. One is a huge piece of beef and the other is a chicken. Yes, you get an entire chicken...and the beef is about the size of a very large book. The amount of flavour here is beyond anything I would have expected. The salad and bread are beyond amazing and the service is great! Ensure you make reservations. You only have two choices, chicken or beef. Who cares...its an amazing meal and a great experience.

WOW! Places like this are few and far between anymore. Desert ambience at its best. Excellent food and service. Choose from steak (seasoned with Connie's special rub) or chicken (slow roasted all day) add salad, rolls (that seem to float down from heaven to your plate) beans (to die for) and delicious fresh fruit cobbler. EVERYTHING, even the coffee is perfect. Come hungry - you won't be disappointed. Reservations are needed.

We had a cool time here! It's worth driving out of your way to this middle of nowhere place. When you arrive you'll find a small collection of farm shacks and a gift shop, so if you're early and its light out you can hang out outside and soak in the sagebrush view. Reservations are required and so is cash, come really hungry! You'll get what it says: a simply Cowboy Dinner. It starts with a large salad with surprisingly good tasting homemade dressings, then comes the soup- tonight it was cream of chicken and vegetable, also very tasty, served with a whole bunch of yummy homemade dinner rolls. Next is your pre-ordered choice of either a giant 30oz steak or a whole chicken served with a baked potato. The simply prepared huge portions of meat more than satisfied us, you'll take half of it home for the next day. We save a little room for a dessert of marionberry shortcake with cream. This is not a fancy place but its good value for money, homey and good fun.

Wow, this place was a hoot! I was expecting Cowboy Dinner Tree to be far more rustic and intimate than it was, but it was a warm and inviting little joint, nonetheless. I highly recommend coming here if you're in the area. Frankly, there's really nowhere else to eat... You have to call and make reservations in advance and specify your choice of beef or chicken. Just don't bother bringing your picky vegetarian friend! I would also recommend not taking the Forest Service roads (from the South) unless you really trust your car and navigation skills. What I didn't realize about this place is that the epic meat course follows endless, delicious and shockingly fresh courses of homemade rolls, salad and homemade dressing, soupy (and meaty) beans, succulent and perfectly cooked MEAT (get the steak, get the steak!). Eat slowly, save room for dessert and don't worry because everyone needs a doggie bag!
